The Early Years... |

Before he was born Scott’s parents inherited an old Burling & Mansfield upright piano from his grandmother. She had been a fine concert pianist back in the day so if the musical gift came from anywhere it came from her. Unfortunately Scott’s parents did not inherit the key to the piano leading to frequent episodes of a rather hyperactive infant Scott running up to the piano, lifting up the lid then banging on the keys before slamming the lid back down again and running away. A child prodigy he was not! Scott began taking piano lessons at the age of seven and when he was twelve he took to the trumpet where he gained his first experiences of playing in a band, from the Symphonic Wind Band at school to the local Doncaster Youth Jazz Association. It wasn't until he was in sixth form, aged sixteen, that Scott found his voice. A production of Grease was being staged and like most of the rest of the school Scott decided to go along to the auditions. Much to his surprise he landed the starring role and decided that it was time to take some singing lessons. By the next year, at the same time as he was sitting Grade 8 Piano, Scott also took Grade 8 Singing. It was during this sixth form period that Scott formed his first band, Freudian Slip, an 8 piece made up of friends from school, and his first experience as a piano vocalist. Scott’s love of music and musical theatre continued through his time at Liverpool University. He had decided to read Psychology instead of music but still spent most of his time involved with various groups including the LU Music Society and the LU Show Troupe, or LUST as it was better known. It was at this point that Scott left the stage behind to take up the baton as musical director for shows including The Hot Mikado (a revamped working of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta), Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Grease (again!) and Cole Porter's Anything Goes. Scott remained heavily involved with music, soaking up the musical heritage from a city that gave us the Beatles. In fact, in his final year Scott lived on that most famous of streets, Penny Lane. Scott graduated from Liverpool University in 2002. |
